Kingman was founded in 1882, a few decades before Arizona officially became a US state. It was named after railroad civil engineer Lewis Kingman (1845-1912).

Initially Kingman's popularity was closely related to the railroad and the mining of minerals in the area, and then later on for becoming the heart of Route 66 Highway.

Today, the city of Kingman continues to benefit some from tourism related to its historic past, but is primarily sustained as a retirement destination for senior citizens.
